RFID, radio frequency identification, is the next generation of bar coding and more. Rather than using direct line of site optical scanners, RFID imbeds a miniscule microchip with an antennae inside product or shipping label that can be read without line of site. Thus entire pallets of products can be automatically entered into inventory as they pass through the warehouse dock door verses having to be broken down and each box being read by hand. The microchip contains much more information than that of a bar code. For example in a cold-chain RFID solution the label could contain the product’s minimum and maximum temperature exposure.
